Why we do the things we do: a short ShortStack Q & A with founder, CEO, and rubber band target, Jim Belosic

There are several questions that we, ShortStack’s team of athletic and attractive customer service heroes, frequently hear. We want to nix any confusion there may be about our product and services, so that our users, and those who are checking us out for the first time, know exactly what to expect.

Q: Can I use ShortStack to create tabs for multiple Pages?
A: Yes!

Q: Why do I log in to ShortStack with my personal Facebook account?
A: Your personal Facebook Profile is what you use to manage your business or brand Facebook Page. You can manage all of your Pages with one personal Profile. With some of our users, this raises questions about privacy. But don’t worry, your personal account is not visible to Fans of the Pages you manage. We do not advise creating a fake Profile to manage your Pages, because if Facebook detects a fake Profile, it will be subject to deletion.

Q: Why are all your payment plans on a monthly basis?
A: Our plans are month-to-month because our pricing is based on Fan count, which can fluctuate. The monthly payments – in conjunction with our lack of contracts – give you, the user, the greatest flexibility. You’ll be re-billed every 30 days for the price of the plan you’re on. We do not offer yearly payment plans.

Q: Why is your pricing based on number of fans?
A: We base our prices on your fan count because the more fans you have, the more resources your tabs will require. We have also found that basing our prices on fan counts is a great way for us to help businesses and brands without a big fanbase get started.

Q: How do you measure Fan count?
A: Fan count is the sum of the number of Fans of all the Pages you install ShortStack tabs to. So, say you manage four Pages, each with 6,000 Fans. The sum of all the Fans would be 24,000, and you would need to purchase the ShortStack Plan, which has a Fan limit of 25,000. But if you take on another Page with 6,000 Fans, your Fan count would be 30,000, and you’d need a higher plan – either the Full Stack Plan or the All You Can Eat Plan.

Q: How many Pages can I install the tabs I create with ShortStack to?
A: Stackers on the Surprisingly Free, Short Stack, Full Stack, and All You Can Eat Plans can install to as many Pages as they have administrative privileges for. Manage Pages for your company, band, and local non-profit you support? You can install ShortStack tabs to all three. However, if you’re on the Silver Dollar Plan, installation is limited to one Page. The Silver Dollar Plan is for companies with more than 2,000 Fans that only need to install to one Page.

Q: Why can’t I pay per campaign?
A: ShortStack doesn’t have individual features you can sign up for à la carte. When you sign up, you get everything available on that plan. But since there are no contracts, you can sign up for a month or two, run your campaign, and then cancel.

Q: Is it true that you only hire members of Mensa International?
A: Nope, just happened that way!

Q: Why can I only install tabs to one Page on the Silver Dollar Plan?
A: The Silver Dollar Plan was designed to bridge a price gap – plans originally went from the Surprisingly Free Plan to the $30/month Short Stack Plan, and there was an outcry from the people. We decided to come up with a plan that was a little more feature-limited than the ShortStack Plan, but in cutting the features, we were also able to trim the price. And there was rejoicing in all the land.

Q: Can I use ShortStack to create tabs for clients?
A: ShortStack can be installed to any Page you’re an admin of. So if you have a client who wants you to design and build a custom Facebook tab, you can use ShortStack to do it. When you’re ready to publish the tab, have your client add you – even temporarily – as an administrator of their Page.

Q: How can my associates/clients access the tabs I created in ShortStack?
A: There are two ways to do this. The first is to use our collaboration feature. If you are the creator of a tab, you can invite any other user to edit that tab. They can design, change, and even install the tab you invite them to. You can only invite other users to collaborate if you’re on the ShortStack Plan or higher, but users you invite can be on any plan, including the Surprisingly Free Plan. When you use the collaboration feature, you can choose to retain ownership of the tab, and the Fans of the Page the tab is installed to count against your allowance. You can also choose to give your associate or client admin rights. They can then assume ownership of the tab, and the Fan count of the Page the tabs is installed to will count against their allowance.

The second way to go about granting access to your tabs to other people is to create a username and password. You can do this by logging in to ShortStack, hovering your mouse pointer over your name in the top-right corner, and clicking ‘Preferences’ from the drop-down menu that appears. This is a non-user-specific method to allow your associates to log in.

Q: Do I need a Credit Card to sign up?
A: Nope! We’re confident in our product, and we want as many businesses, agencies, brands, and organizations as possible to try it out. That’s why it’s totally and completely free to try.

Q: Why does Jim end up being the butt of most all of the jokes around Pancake Labs?
A: Water finds its own level.

Q: Do I have to sign a contract when I sign up?
A: No. All of our plans are month-to-month, so our users aren’t tied-down with contracts.

Q: Why can’t I access the database on the Surprisingly Free Plan?
A: Maintaining databases is costly from a host, server, and resource perspective. In order for us to keep our prices as low as possible, we don’t allow databases to be used on our Surprisingly Free Plan.

Q: Why can’t I install custom tabs to my personal Facebook Profile?
A: Facebook doesn’t allow the installation of custom tabs to personal Profiles.

Q: Does ShortStack access the data my Fans enter into the promotion I create?
A: Absolutely not. That data is owned solely by you. In fact, ShortStack will NEVER access the information your Fans give you unless we have your expressed written consent.

Q: What happens when I eclipse my Fan allowance?
A: When you’re nearing the Fan limit for your plan, you’ll get an email notifying you that you’re close. From there, you can take action to reduce your Fan count (disabling or deleting tabs). Once you do eclipse your Fan allowance, you’ll be prompted to sign up if you’re a Surprisingly Free Plan member, and if you’re already a paying member, you’ll be automatically bumped up to the next plan.

Q: Why pancakes?
A: We prefer to say, “OMG Pancakes!

Q: Do you have a chart comparing your services to those of your competitors?
A: Since ShortStack is unique in its offerings, we believe it speaks for itself. Furthermore, the world of custom Facebook tab applications is dynamic. ShortStack’s capabilities are ever-changing, as are the capabilities of our competitors. No matter how we tried to compare our platform to another, the comparison would be obsolete by tomorrow. Besides, it’s just in bad taste.

Q: Is there a non-profit rate?
A: We do offer some non-profits a discounted rate. If you’re the Page admin of a non-profit, we encourage you to send us information about your organization. We have a certain amount of funds to dedicate to non-profit work, so each non-profit is evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Have a non-profit that somehow has something to do with Legos? We might even pay you.

Q: Why don’t you offer phone support?
A: There are a couple reasons why we don’t offer phone support. The primary reason is that support tickets are much more effective in diagnosing and treating any problems you may encounter using our platform. If you run into a wall when using our service and you submit a support ticket, that ticket comes to us with all the information about your tabs. We can see what you’ve designed and that helps us offer better support.

The second reason is the cost. We couldn’t offer our platform at our low prices and operate a call center.

Q: Does ShortStack do design work?
A: We don’t do the design work ourselves, but we recently launched a program that will help all our users who are looking for a hand in the design process. Originally titled the “ShortStack Syrup Alliance,” we downgraded the name to “ShortStack Masters Program.” It’s a listing of ShortStack users who we believe use our platform exceptionally well. Their services are available here.
