Problogger Darren Rowse wrote a post earlier this month titled “How I Got 18 Times More ‘Likes’ on a Facebook Update.” Two major takeaways from the piece that are definitely worth sharing are:
1.) Be specific with how you want your Facebook audience to answer a question
In an example post Darren shows, he asked, “What did you think of the Facebook Influence webinar? (in one word)” Structuring his post using a direct question and asking his audience to answer in a specific way–using one word– resulted in an engagement of over 60 status Likes and 260 comments.
2.) Post images the right way
Images are by far the most popular form of media on Facebook for users to either Like or share. With that said, allowing an image to be the most dominate piece of content in a status update, above links and text, can result in dramatically higher response rates.
For increased engagement on status updates, Darren suggests posting an image, then attaching the link in the photo description area, as opposed to the alternative and more traditional method of just posting the link as your status and letting Facebook pull the image from your post. The primarily reason this trick works so well is because the bigger the photo, the more eye-catching it is for users and thus, the more likely they are to engage. Check out Darren’s example below.
