This past summer I can recall watching a video of Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook COO, at the Nielsen Consumer 360 conference speaking about how email will soon be phased out and replaced most predominately with forms of instant messaging. Her thoughts, pretty radicle, but foreseeable.
Facebook is now offering a desktop chat application for Windows, a product launch which compliments Sandberg’s vision very well. Facebook Messenger includes notifications and Ticker, all features which drive users back to the site. The app further supports chatting and messaging only with user’s friends. Group chat and video calling are not supported at this time.
As reported by TechCrunch, the messenger for Windows only (Mac users will be left in the dark for now) is now available for public download in Facebook’s Help Center.
If you have Windows 7 and would like to check out Facebook Messanger, go ahead and download it here.
Do you think Facebook has a great enough influence to phase out email communication?
