Hashtags aren’t just for social media

Put hashtags to work for your business by using them in contests and promotions. When you require a hashtag in a contest or a promotion, you gain benefits above and beyond what you would have received if you had only included them in your social media posts. Running a hashtag contest helps you gather user-generated content (UGC) and get your brand in front of a new audience.

You can use a combination of popular hashtags and branded hashtags to get the most reach and exposure to your contest. Check out the 12 Days of Sun-Maid sweepstakes in which participants posted a favorite Sun-Maid holiday memory using the hashtags #sweepstakes and #12DaysofSunMaid.

Instagram’s recent API updates have made it even easier for you to gather UGC. The new process requires an @mention along with your hashtag in order for the entry to be pulled into your feed. Though this is an extra step for your contest’s participants, it allows you to use simple popular hashtags instead of complex branded hashtags that are too long to type and remember.

For example, to avoid pulling in entries unrelated to your business, you used to need a creative and unique hashtag such as #MyCompany2019HolidayGiveaway. But with the new @mention rule, you can use a popular hashtag such as #sweepstakes because only entries with that hashtag will be pulled in when they @mention your profile.
